Here are some recent grants made by The John R. Oishei Foundation toward the goal of raising academic performance of economically disadvantaged and lower-performing students in our community: Ashford Hollow Foundation for the Visual and Performing Arts $150,000 To support arts programming utilizing "October wood" to teach youth at risk creative problem solving and leadership skills. The project is collaboration with Ashford, Sustainable Earth Solutions, and Boys and Girls Clubs to provide intensive training in wood carving design and creation utilizing CPS techniques, "change leadership" training and NYS standards in Math, Science, English, and Art. For more information, please visit http://griffispark.org/ahf Computers for Children $200,000 To support "Phase II of theTechnology Transfer Program." This funding is for the second phase of a 3 phase collaborative project between Computers for Children and the Buffalo Community Centers Collaborative. In Phase I, the majority of the Centers received improvements to their computer labs and kids were trained in soft and hardware after school programs. During Phase II, additional Centers will undergo technology improvements, additional kids will be trained in soft and hardware during after school programs and they will be be given the knowledge to act as technology specialists at their individual centers. A help desk, specifically available to BCCC organizations will be created at CFC in collaboration with Buff State. (MICE) $100,000 To support an ethical entrepreneurship training program. MICE originated in Hungary in order to teach high school students ethical entrepreneurial skills. Its founder is now working with a UB Professor, the UB Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and local business leaders to develop a Buffalo program. Collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo, City Honors/Hutch Tech and several suburban schools will allow MICE to teach 2 classes for a total of 80 students who will take part in a one-year pilot program.
