Recent Grants

Here are some recent grants made by The John R. Oishei Foundation toward the goal of increasing economic self sufficiency of low income residents in our community:

Everywoman Opportunity Center                                                 $161,000

To support a comprehensive tax screening pilot. Everywoman Opportunity Center will work with SEEDCO, a national organization that recently brought its Earned Benefits tool to Buffalo to reach out to 2,500 people during tax season.  Over 600 clients would receive follow-up services after the tax season and be tracked for benefit use.  Forty families will receive intensive counseling services to create individualized self sufficiency plans and half would be expected to meet their goals.  For more information, please visit http://www.everywoman.org

Goodwill Industries of WNY                                                          $152,220

To support the e-commerce program. In August of 2006, Goodwill began in earnest an on-line commerce effort through National Goodwill.  It has proven to be highly successful as a revenue stream and training opportunity for Goodwill clients.  Goodwill will expand this effort to a new 800 sq.ft. satellite that currently houses the Goodwill Career Technology Training Center.  Seventy-eight paid interns will receive on-the job training through the online auction site that will build this effort and prepare participants for possible employment in entrepreneurship, customer service, call center employment or other similar industries. For more information about Goodwill, please visit http://www.goodwillwny.org

Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP)                                           $25,000

To support Core Operations. MAP will develop business plans for their 2 parallel programs:  Food Ventures/Job Ventures and the Urban Farm Center. This funding will also provide for an organizational assessment to ensure that the organization has the capacity to expand their programs as determined by the 2 completed business plans.  For more information about MAP, please visit http://www.mass-ave.org

WNY Americorps                                                                             $175,000

To support expansion of the Youth Corps program. The WNY Americorps brings together "at risk" youth to serve wider community needs while having access to educational opportunities.    This funding will provide for the continuation and expansion the program.
